Jolly’s made to measure triumph

Firefighter Dixon, on duty, wearing his Jolly structural firefighitng boots.
Correctly fitting PPE is an essential component in ensuring firefighters experience optimum protection, mobility and comfort. A challenging prospect when injury is involved. Pac Fire strives to deliver PPE that provides the best possible fit to Australasian firefighters. To achieve this, Pac Fire actively seeks out like minded partners, such as Jolly Scarpe who’s status as a leading firefighting footwear supplier and agile manufacturing processes allow them to produce “made to measure” solutions.

In 2020, Fire and Rescue NSW approached Pac Fire on behalf of Firefighter Dixon after exhausting all traditional footwear options following an injury resulting in the fusion of the right first metatarsal.

Pac Fire’s premium footwear suppliers, Jolly produced around 15 pairs of “made to measure” firefighting boots annually at the time of Fire and Rescue NSW enquiry. After learning of his story, Jolly signalled their eagerness to take on the challenge of providing a highly protective structural firefighting boot that met Firefighter Dixons unique needs and would ultimately see him return to active service.

Firefighter Dixon’s finished footwear is based on Jolly’s popular “Fire Guard” design, a zip front, structural firefighting boot already a popular option supplied to several of the UK’s Fire & Rescue Services.

Upon receiving his boots, Firefighter Dixon was cautiously optimistic when his custom made orthotics fitted perfectly. He commented that the boots were surprisingly comfortable straight out of the box – all be it a little stiff. Aside from the fit, the feature Firefighter Dixon appreciated most was the ankle protection system providing additional support that almost felt like the boots made ascending stairs easier. He also noted how stable his foot felt in the boot, especially considering it was gripping him from the calf and ankle.

Upon passing his assessment and gaining clearance to return to active firefighting duty, Firefighter Dixon told Pac Fire that there were no words to express his emotions. He went on to tell has that returning to active service after traveling such a long road “meant the world to him”.

Firefighter Dixon’s, wearing his made to measure Jolly structural firefighitng boots based off the popular Fire Guard design.
Jeremy Dawkins, Northern European and Australasian Sales Agent for Jolly Scarpe was heavily involved in Firefighter Dixon’s footwear project, describing it as “very challenging, but ultimately, very rewarding”. Mr Dawkins went onto commend Firefighter Dixon’s commitment to returning to active service to protect the community. He also complemented Fire and Rescue NSW on taking the obligation to support a fully inclusive and diverse workforce extremely seriously. A commitment not seen in other parts of the world.
Jolly is currently producing another pair of “made to measure” footwear for Firefighter Dixon to ensure continuity of service well into the future.

Pac Fire would like to extend our thanks to Jolly for undertaking such an important project and congratulate Firefighter Dixon on returning to active service within Fire and Rescue NSW.

Pacific BR9’s Kevlar® shell wins over New South Wales Rural Fire Service.

NSW RFS BR9 Helmets in production at Pacific Helmets, New Zealand
Production is in full flight at Pacific Helmets (NZ) Ltd to deliver the BR9 wildland firefighting helmet to the largest fire service in the world – NSW Rural Fire Service (NSW RFS).

At least 40,000 members of NSW RFS are set to receive a new Pacific BR9 wildland firefighting helmet in a large scale rollout set to take place in the coming year.

Feedback from NSW RFS members indicated that helmets were a top priority after the 2020 bush fire fundraising appeal raised over $100 million. The funds have been allocated to essential equipment and important upgrades for the volunteer firefighters who provide fire and emergency services to approximately 95% of New South Wales.

The BR9, selected by NSW RFS as their service issued wildland firefighting helmet, is a popular lightweight head protection platform that supports a full range of accessories. The standard shell shape incorporates a narrow side brim and multiple crown ridges allow for extra strength and air flow.

Impact protection was a crucial performance criteria when evaluating helmets. The BR9 excelled, largely due to Pacific’s acclaimed DuPont™ Kevlar® & fibreglass reinforced composite shell. Kevlar®, a synthetic fibre renown for it’s strength, provides additional heat- resistance and has been used in the design and manufacture of Pacific Helmets branded helmets since their founding in 1982.

The multi-ridge design of the BR9 contributes to the helmets excellent impact resistance
The multi-ridge design of the BR9 contributes to the helmets excellent impact resistance results, effectively dispersing blows over several points instead of being focused on a single area.

The NSW RFS BR9 also features a clear, clip-on face shield, which provides high speed particle impact protection for the face and eyes. A Mesh insert inside the helmets cradle, which spreads the weight of the helmet evenly over the head, improving comfort. 25mm earmuff brackets for the application of helmet mounted earmuffs and rear accessory straps to effectively retain single strap goggles.

Understanding the importance of delivering information efficiently, Pac Fire has established the NSW RFS Helmet Hub. A centralised online library that includes product information, specifications, downloads, training videos, FAQ, spare parts and accessories specifically for NSW RFS members. The Helmet Hub can be reached by scanning a specialised barcode, found inside the helmets shell and on much of the literature with the helmet, with a smart phone.

South32 GEMCO adopt MSA Bristol XFlex: the gold standard in firefighting garments

South32 GEMCO take delivery of MSA Bristol XFlex

Pac Fire is excited to announce the selection MSA Bristol XFlex by South32 GEMCO as their new structural firefighting ensemble.

South32 GEMCO operate a Northern Territory manganese mine, on the island of Groote Eylandt in the Gulf of Carpentaria. The remote location of the South32 GEMCO mining operation means the specialised fire and emergency services team attend a wide range of incidents including but not limited to structural fire, road crash rescue, technical rescue and bushfire that occur at the mine site, within the local township and amongst the indigenous community.

In short the South32 GEMCO fire and rescue team need to be ready to handle just about anything at a moments notice – with backup over an hour away by air.

Recently, South32 GEMCO’s existing structural firefighting garments reached the end of their service life. This prompted research into a new ensemble designed to suit the unique environmental demands that go hand in hand with mines location as well as the varied incidents the emergency services team are presented with.

Environmental factors such as the high, unabating temperature, averaging over 30 degrees celsius and relative humidity greater than 70% were major considerations during garment evaluation. The conditions encountered on Groote Eylandt result in thermal load being exerted on responders from the moment garments are donned, making the overall weight of the ensemble and breathability extremely important criteria.

After an evaluation of current market offerings and user trials, South32 GEMCO moved forward with MSA Bristol XFlex, Pac Fire’s premium structural firefighting ensemble which incorporates sports styling, making it one of the most comfortable and ergonomic garments on the market today.

South32 GEMCO take delivery of MSA Bristol XFlex

Nabeel Yassine, Pac Fire’s National Sales Manager, who was heavily involved with the project to deliver XFlex to South32 GEMCO, commented:

“The ergonomic fit, superior thermal protection and industry leading breathability made MSA Bristol XFlex the perfect choice for the unique circumstances surrounding the South32 GEMCO Mine.”

The South32 GEMCO XFlex features Nomex® 360 as the selected outershell material. Nomex® 360 is a recent innovation by Safety Components and provides vital protection against heat and flame. On the inside of the garment, GORE® Parallon®, the latest moisture management system from W. L. Gore & Associates, delivers complete balance between breathability and thermal protection.

Tim McKinlay Leading Hand with South32 GEMCO emergency services, reported the MSA Bristol XFlex moisture management system, GORE® Parallon®, to have delivered the best internal heat and moisture dissipation during user trials. He went on to say: “sweat and moisture was wicked away from the skin, helping to keep our bodies cool and dry during the various exercises”. During the trial, participants experienced improved manoeuvrability attributed XFlex’s unique shoulder and knee shaping coupled with under arm gussets, allowing for crawling and reaching while in the garment without it bunching or riding up.

Understanding the important role that the correct fit plays in providing optimum protection, Pac Fire delivered an onsite sizing session which included the utilisation of specialised sizing sets to effectively and accurately measure responders for their new ensemble. PPE/C integration exercises conducted during sizing ensured optimum compatibility with other elements of the South32 GEMCO kit.

At the conclusion of garment evaluation, South32 GEMCO selected PAC+CARE as their nominated service provider for care and maintenance of their new MSA Bristol XFlex. On dispatch PAC+CARE specialists allocated each item to it’s new owner, initiating life-cycle monitoring which in the future will track and report on important data like wash count, wash type, inspections and repair history.

PAC+CARE’S NFPA 1851 compliant approach to cleaning targets the most prevalent and persistent contaminants in firefighter protective wear and combats them with best practice methodology, state of the art washing and drying technology and leading chemical inactivation. This approach results in a significant reduction in contamination load thereby mitigating the effects of exposure to responders while maximising a garments operational life. Of particular interests to South32 GEMCO was PAC+CARE’S history of effectively removing asbestos contamination for PPE/C. Asbestos sheeting is still present in some buildings on Groote Eylandt and was highlighted as a risk to their emergency service workers.

The South32 GEMCO XFlex was delivered and began it’s service life in February 2021.

While the Pac Fire earmuffs will attach to any Pacific Helmets model helmet already fitted with Earmuff Brackets – we do not recommend pairing them with a wide brim BR9 Helmet or a BR5. The wider helmet brim may stop the earmuff from engaging fully and achieving the desired level of hearing protection.

“Healthy Firefighters” is a program established in 2006 by Swedish unions, employers and agencies who recognise Firefighters face a significant risk from occupational diseases Since it’s inception, Healthy Firefighters the Skelleftea Model has been adopted by 17 European nations and is gaining considerable momentum in the United States and Australia. The program shows why, how and what can be done to safeguard our first responders. Products, like Responder Wipes, that bear the “Healthy Firefighters” mark, have been identified as essential tools in providing a better work environment and improved health for firefighters.

Chief's Large Responder Wipes Carton (16 Wipes per Carton)Infused with Micellar Water, the wipes effectively clean dirt, oil, soot and other hydrocarbons from the skin. Fire Profi: so comfortable you forget you’re wearing firefighting footwear

Fire Profi from Jolly Scarpe have landed in Australia
Jason Hull and Jolly Fire Profi Firefighting Footwear
Jason Hull swears by his Jolly Fire Profi boots having worn them in a 26-mile marathon, 12-hour Beachy Head Coastal Walk and other charity events.
Fire Profi are pull-on style structural firefighting boots from globally renown footwear manufacturer, Jolly Scarpe. Testament to the boots innovative design, superior safety features and premium comfort, Fire Profi was awarded to the UK Collaborative Framework, servicing nearly 30,000 firefighters, spanning services across the United Kingdom, including London Fire Brigade and Scottish Fire.

Fire Profi have been precision crafted to fit the foot perfectly. Features focus on keeping the foot stable inside the boot while delivering a level of comfort that makes the user almost forget they’re wearing firefighting footwear.

A feeling former UK firefighter, Jason Hull knows only too well. Jason elected to wear his service issued, Jolly Fire Profi boots in a 26-mile (approx. 42km) marathon, rather than the more traditional and accepted option, sports trainers. Why did Jason make this unusual choice? Fire Profi’s Wrap Band System (WBS) secures the foot from the top rather than the heel, ensuring it remains stable in the boot for longer, vastly reducing common foot injuries like friction burns and blisters.

After his positive experience in the marathon Jason opted to wear Fire Profi boots in the 12-hour Beachy Head Coastal Walk skirting the hilly Sussex coastline. Again, Jason was the odd one out but had the last laugh, completing the challenging trek with his feet entirely intact.

Today Jason is a firefighter in the UAE where he still wears his much loved Fire Profi boots on duty and in subsequent charity events, raising much needed funds and awareness for The Fire Fighters Charity.

Fire Profi has just landed in Australia and is available now from Pac Fire. Read more or add a pair to your next order here.
